Bowen therapy is a gentle hands-on approach to healing that works on the soft tissues of the body. It can be used to treat muscular pain, injury and tension, as well as create an overall sense of wellbeing. While bowen therapy is considered a type of massage, it differs from traditional massage due to its unique technique. It involves gently applied pressure at specific points throughout the body, stimulating a response in the nervous system. This encourages the muscles and other soft tissues to relax and realign, providing relief from pain and tension.
At A Myo-Therapy Approach to Remedial & Bowen Therapies, I use bowen therapy and neuro-muscular integration techniques to assist acute, chronic pain and dysfunctional conditions. It can be particularly useful for those with lymphoedema as it helps to reduce fluid build-up, reduce pain and improve mobility.

Muscular pain can often arise as a result of tension, postural imbalance or injury. This causes you to feel pain because the nerve endings in your muscles are sending signals to the brain, alerting it that something is wrong.
Bowen therapy helps to reduce this pain by re-aligning the muscles and soft tissues. It does so by releasing the contraction in the fascia—the connective tissue that binds together our muscles and organs. This is achieved through a series of light, rolling moves that are applied to specific points on the body. As soon as pressure is released, these areas respond by activating receptors in the nervous system. This triggers the body to relax and realign, allowing it to heal itself.
Without manual intervention such as bowen therapy and neurostructural integration techniques, the body can remain stuck in a contracted state, leading to ongoing pain and discomfort.
Bowen therapy differs from remedial massage in several ways. It uses a much lighter pressure which makes Bowen therapy an ideal treatment for those suffering from chronic conditions where remedial massage may be too intense or long. This is an ideal treatment for a myriad of musculoskeletal dysfunctions from babies to the elderly.
In addition, Bowen therapy and neurostructural integration techniques works at a cellular level by stimulating receptors in the nervous system, whereas remedial massage uses concentrated pressure to release muscle tension. This means that Bowen therapy is able to work more deeply and quickly than other forms of manual treatment.
Finally, the techniques used in Bowen therapy and neurostructural integration techniques are specific and tailored to each individual patient. As such, the therapist is able to get an immediate response from the body and make adjustments as needed. This can allow the pinpointing and targeting of tension and pain areas more effectively, leading to quicker relief.
Bowen therapy has been shown to provide relief for a variety of conditions including:
It appears to be most effective for musculoskeletal issues as well as chronic or acute pain. It can also be used to reduce stress and tension, improve posture and promote overall health and wellbeing.
Unfortunately, within private health they don't cover Bowen therapy however, there are options for remedial massages.
